'Made by Me'

Mel and I have been coming to the Market once a month with our jewellery almost since it started. We both offer a wide range of pieces, some new and some recycled, made from a variety of materials including gemstone beads; new and recycled hall marked silver; fused glass and old, sometimes broken, vintage elements.

With my 'Made by Me' hat on, I make strung gemstone necklaces usually with silver clasps, some handmade by Mel, plus bracelets and earrings, including a range Birthstone Bracelets and Earrings.

My '2nd Time Around' collection is recycled and up-cycled from old, sometimes broken brooches, necklaces, earrings and bracelets and anything else that looks pretty, many of the raw materials for these I find in my monthly trawl around Wallingford's charity shops and Antique establishments. This collection includes large statement 'garland' style and smaller more discreet necklaces, plus brooches, earrings and bracelets, all using vintage and recycled materials.

I also make funky, fun, fused glass brooches, earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces and some cufflinks for the gentlemen. Some items incorporate dichroic glass (dichroic glass was developed by the US space industry and has now found a new life in wonderfully vibrant, colourful jewellery)

Mel makes new silver jewellery: rings, bracelets, brooches and pendants. The pendants include a selection made from British minerals. He also cuts and sets stones into pendants and rings. All his silver is hallmarked so you know you're getting the genuine article.

He recycles too, using silver cutlery to make rings and bangles. All these recycled pieces keep their original hallmark and have a new 'change of use' one added by the London Assay Office and come complete with a certificate to prove it. (The new hall mark is a legal requirement that not everybody bothers with)

We are both happy to undertake commissions and we're always happy to talk about what we do and how we do it. Everything we bring to the market is made by either one or both of us and is unique. We bring new items and new designs virtually every time we come so there is always something new to see.

Brides who are seeking something a little different in their wedding bouquet should take a look at The Button Room. A refreshing change from flowers, each bespoke piece is carefully crafted by hand using a combination of new and vintage buttons, beads, pearls and original pieces of jewellery threaded together for a highly original twist on the traditional bouquet.

Each bouquet is beautifully finished with satin ribbon or silk flowers to create an exquisite and personal display. Designs can be matched to particular themes or colour schemes and any combination of modern and vintage can be used - anything goes! Some pieces are so original they have even featured on Kirstie Allsopp's Handmade Britain Facebook page.

The inspiration behind these fabulous creations is owner and designer Devon Masters, a mum of two who has a background in fashion and jewellery making. She says, "Many of the brides I meet say they want a change from traditional flowers in their bouquet. Lots of wedding day elements have moved with the times over recent years, so why should the flowers be any different? Plus a bouquet from me will live on long after the magical day, to be treasured forever."

The Button Room also create gorgeous posies for bridesmaids and flower girls as well as button-inspired necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair slides. Buttons are joined with antique, previously loved pieces of jewellery, vintage beads and pearls plus Swarovski crystals to produce simple yet stunning designs.

A range of Devon's bouquets and bespoke jewellery can be viewed at thebuttonroom.co.uk. Some pieces are available to purchase off the shelf, with stock added daily, but the majority, particularly the bouquets, are made to order. Prices start at an astonishingly affordable £40 - even better value when you consider the price of freshly cut flowers.
